About James Rankin

James Rankin

James Edwin “Jim” Rankin was a dedicated PMI member, utilizing his teaching skills to promote project management and teach project management skills. He was very involved with the Dallas Chapter of PMI. Mr. Rankin’s computer career began in the United States Air Force where his military records hail him as “The Outstanding Student” in his class at Shepard Air Force Base Technical Training Center.

In 1969, Jim Rankin married Brenda Kay Turner of Newberry, South Carolina. Upon concluding his military service, the Rankins moved to Dayton, Ohio. After graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Quantitative Business Analysis from Wright State University, he was recruited by Ross Perot’s Electronic Data Systems, Inc., (EDS).

Jim had extensive experience as project manager and lead programmer/analyst in the financial industry with project management and IT certifications, and proven capabilities in large-scale financial applications. Some of these included a certificate of deposit, mortgage loan origination, and securities custody and control. One of his proudest professional accomplishments was writing a major portion of Mortgage Lending and Control System (MLCS) while employed by Symbolics Financial Systems, Inc. and Lomas & Nettleton Information Systems, Inc.

Richland College provided an outlet for his love of teaching. Jim taught technology classes on a part-time basis from 1979 – 1992. He was responsible for text selection and course materials development in courses for COBOL, CICS, JCL, programming logic and MS-DOS just to name a few. Beloved by his students, he loved to use humor to make learning fun.

Jim Rankin was not only an incredible presence in the professional world, he was also a brilliant person of rarity. He was an amazingly humble man. So much so, that even his family was not aware of many of his accomplishments until researching his biography. He started every day by reading the Sports page and completing the crossword puzzle. His memory was virtually flawless. His personal loves were God, family, golf, sports, golf, hamburgers, and golf. Jim was an adoring father to three daughters and “Grampy” to one grandson. His love for his family was even more extraordinary than his amazing life.

Congratulations to the most recent recipient of this scholarship
